Ayubowan! I’m Dr. Dinu Sri Madusanka, and my story might sound familiar to many Sri Lankans juggling multiple passions. By day, I’m deep in the world of science & research, but when the lab coat comes off, you’ll find me with paint-stained fingers and a brush in hand.
My journey into watercolors started quite unexpectedly. Despite years of scientific training that demands precision and predictability, I found myself completely captivated by a medium that thrives on beautiful accidents and happy surprises. There’s something almost poetic about how watercolor rebels against complete control – much like life itself in our beautiful, unpredictable Sri Lanka.
What draws me most to watercolors is actually the science within the art. Watching pigments dance with water, observing how different papers absorb moisture, understanding the physics of wet-on-wet bleeding – it’s like conducting tiny experiments with every brushstroke. Each painting becomes a laboratory where chemistry meets creativity.
As someone still finding my footing in this artistic world, I’m constantly learning and experimenting. My heart pulls me toward capturing the essence of nature landscapes – the misty mornings over hills, the golden light hitting during sunset, the monsoon clouds gathering over our ancient cities. I’m particularly drawn to tonalism & impressionism, a styles that speaks through subtle shifts in light and shadow and feelings rather than bold declarations.
In research, we strive for repeatability and precision. In watercolor, I’ve learned to embrace the unpredictable. That accidental bloom of color, the way paint pools in unexpected corners, the happy accidents that turn a planned cityscape into something more atmospheric than I ever imagined – these moments have taught me that some of life’s most beautiful discoveries happen when we loosen our grip on control.
My vision extends beyond just creating pretty pictures. I want my art to tell stories – stories of our mind, the quiet moments in bustling cities, the peace found in our natural landscapes. Through watercolor’s inherent simplicity, I hope to create connections, spark conversations, and maybe inspire other science-minded folks to pick up a brush.
This artistic journey has opened doors I never knew existed. It’s taught me that creativity and analytical thinking aren’t opposites – they’re complementary forces that can create something truly unique when combined.
Whether you’re here because you love art, because you’re curious about the intersection of science and creativity, or because you’re a fellow looking for local artistic voices, I’m grateful you’ve stopped by. Join me as I continue exploring this wonderful world where precision meets spontaneity, where research methodology meets creative intuition.
Let’s see where this journey takes us, one brushstroke at a time.
